Elizabeth 1. (7. september 1533 - 24. marts 1603), dronning af England fra 1558-1603, datter af Henry 8. og dennes anden hustru, Anne Boleyn. Inden Elizabeth blev 3 år gammel, havde faderen ladet hendes moder halshugge i Tower. Kongens næste hustru, Jane Seymour fødte kongen den længe ønskede søn, Edward, som fulgte Henry 8. på tronen efter faderens død som Edward 6. Den unge Edward led (vistnok) af tuberkulose og døde i 1653. Mary, datter af Henry 8. og Katherine af Aragonien, fulgte broderen på tronen. Ved Marys død blev Elizabeth dronning af England. Det skete den 17. november 1558.
Elizabeths første udfordring var truslen fra hendes kusine, den skotske - og katolske - dronning Mary, som havde et stærkt og legitimt krav på den engelske trone. Da Mary måtte flygte fra Skotland, blev hun anbragt i husarrest i England, og efter en række beskyldninger om at konspirere mod den engelske trone blev hun dømt til døden. Elizabeth underskrev dødsdommen, og Mary blev henrettet den 8. februar 1587.
Efter at have slået den (troede man) uovervindelige spanske armada blev England den protestantiske højborg. England begyndte nu at etablere sig som tidens mest magtfulde kolonimagt med støtte af dristige søfolk som Hawkins, Drake og Raleigh. Tiden bragte også en renæssance for litteraturen med navne som Shakespeare, Marlowe og Spenser.
